Val Thorens Practicalities

Practical information and Apres Ski guide to Val Thorens

While not as bad as neighbouring Les Menuires, Val Thorens lacks the picturesque appeal of Meribel or even St Martin. Still, for party-hungry, budget-conscious skiers looking for instant access to the slopes, it ticks a lot of boxes.

Bars and clubs

There is no shortage of bars. Le Viking is surprisingly not a Swedish bar and attracts lots of Brits - it has a large screen for showing sports as well as free pool and internet access. L'Eclipse bar in the Galerie Caron is open late. The resort is a little short on clubs: Malaysia tries to create an urban club vibe, the Underground is more of a dive dirty and Beach Mountain attracts the money crowd.

Best Apres-ski

For Swedish apres-ski go to Tango where it gets lively when the lifts shut. The Brits tend to hang out at the Frog and Roastbeef. The Rhum Box is a tiny bar tucked away on the edge of the Galerie Peclet where the home-flavoured rum can be intoxicating.

Shopping

The two shopping areas are situated at either end of the resort: Galerie Caron at the lower end, Galerie Peclet at the top end. Neither is very pretty to look at but you can buy just about anything you could need here. You will also find supermarkets such as Sherpa.

Eating

With over 70 restaurants and bars, Va! T caters for every taste and budget. Perennial Footprint favourite L'Oxalys is the top place to eat in the resort. The restaurant of the Oxalys serviced apartments is expensive but well worth it. For pub grub try the Frog and Roastbeef, a British outpost and allegedly the highest pub in Europe. The name also reveals much about Val Thorens! John's is well known for its burgers, Vieux Chalet and Chamiere both do excellent Savoyard fare, while La Joyeuse Fondue does what it says on the tin.
