Describing St Gervais as a cheaper, more family-orientated version of nearby Megeve - as most guidebooks seem to do - does a great disservice to the town. An old-fashioned spa town first popular in the early 1800s, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains - to give the place its full name - boasts classic stone buildings, ironwork and sculptures reminiscent of the Paris Metro, some beautiful bridges, a working, rustic funicular and a stunning gorge location. In any other country it would be a major resort-in France it is overshadowed by neighbouring Chamonix and Megeve.
The Evasion Mont-Blanc area is beginner and intermediate heaven, with a huge variety of slopes and incredible views towards Mt Blanc and down the valley towards Sallanches. Expect slushy, mainly south-facing pistes, tree-lined runs and picturesque cowsheds to ski past.
The gentle slopes of Les Contamines are a perfect introduction to skiing.
Take the funicular rack-and-pinion train (built in 1904) to Les Houches for an unforgettable day's skiing - this is how sophisticated skiing once was.
Good skiers will find much to entertain them in the St Gervais and Les Contamines areas, though it's probably best to head for Megeve to be truly satisfied.
This attractive small spa town has been a resort ever since the first tourists arrived here to take the waters in 1806. It lies at the head of a dramatic river gorge midway between Chamonix and Megève and serves as the gateway to two important ski areas encompassing the villlages of Le Fayet, Le Bettex and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce.
The main skiing to the east of the town, reached by a fast 20-person gondola from the outskirts, is linked across the slopes of Mont d'Arbois to Megève. The area has a terrain park and a half-pipe. On the other side of town, the venerable Mont Blanc Tramway, a rack-and-pinion railway dating back to 1904, takes you to the top of the neighbouring ski area of Les Houches.
