Morzine

Find Chalets Resort Guide to Morzine

The resort of Morzine is situated mid-way between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, Morzine is stunning for alpine scenery, and lying between forests and summits Morzine has a very unique village feel, and has been a village alpine resort since the 1930s. Morzine has developed over the years to a highly reputable resort for both winter and summer activities.

For our money, Morzine is the best base from which to explore the enormous Portes du Soleil area. It combines the bustle of a busy, vibrant town with some of the finest skiing in Europe, and as such is hugely popular with British skiers. Even better, it is extremely picturesque, thanks to a lovely location along the dramatic River Dranse, and its northerly location (only an hour or so from Geneva) makes it great for short transfers and self-drive trips. Perhaps the only drawback is the size of the place.

Morzine Ski Resort

Morzine Pro's

  • Enormous area
  • Fantastic nightlife
  • Vibrant town

Morzine Con's

  • Sprawling town means some accommodation far from lifts
  • Extremely busy during February

Ideally placed right in the middle of the Portes du Soleil, Morzine is the gateway to a marvelous winter playground of 650 km of ski-slopes. In summer, these slopes become sign-posted footpaths for trekking and MTB, and have miles of open spaces surrounding the ski-runs.

If visiting Morzine for either for a few days or a longer winter ski holiday, both idlers and sports fans will find everything you need for a relaxing break!

Beginners

Two obvious options are to take the Super Morzine lift and then spend the day lapping the east blues accessed via the Zore, Baron and Seraussaix lifts. Or take the Pleney lift and explore the blues from the Belvedera chair. Complete beginners will probably find it best to stick to the nursery slopes in Morzine.

Intermediate

You'll want to spend most of your time in Avoriaz. If Super Morzine is too busy, it might be worth taking the bus to Les Prodains and getting the big lift up to Avoriaz. From there, you have many options. The Grandes Combes, Lac Intrets, Prolays and Lindarets all offer varied reds that should keep most skiers occupied for the season, let alone the week. You might also want to explore Les Lindarets if Avoriaz is too crowded. Get the bus from Morzine to Ardent and take the lift from there.

Expert

You've probably already heard of'The Wall', the infamous run that links Avoriaz to Switzerland. Make your way to the Chavanette area if you want to test yourself on this most famous of Alpine runs. Elsewhere, there are a number of blacks coming off the Grandes Combes chair, and a renowned black off the top of the Chamossiere chair.

Morzine - Portes du Soleil

Morzine is one of the best (if not the best) resorts from which to explore the vast Portes du Soleil area. It combines the bustle of a busy, vibrant town with some of the finest skiing in Europe, very popular with British skiers.

Morzine is beautiful - by the dramatic River Dranse, only an hour or so from Geneva making Morzine ideal for short ski breaks and self-drive ski trips.

Perhaps the only negative is that because Morzine sits in a valley, and because it's spread out over the years if you stay at the far ends of the town you'll end up having to catch a bus to get to the lifts.

Morzine for families

Morzine has a good nursery provision (babies from age three months) and there is a choice of children's ski schools. It's worth noting that Avoriaz is car-free

Morzine shopping

Morzine has around 100 or so shops including stylish boutiques, jewellers and chocolatiers. You can ski over to one of the Swiss resorts such as Champéry for Swiss souvenirs.

Après ski and Eating out

In Morzine the Action Sport Café (avenue de Joux Plane) has Internet connections and games machines and Le Laurys nightclub (60 route des Udrezants)

Morzine has a around 30 restarurants including Italian and Indian and traditional French. La Grange (chemin de la Couttetaz) serves local cuisine we'd recommend the ginger kir royal.
