Meribel has long had the reputation as an Alpine party stronghold. Some romantics reckon toffee vodka, that staple of the ski-week booze-up, was invented here one fateful season. Certainly, a holiday in Meribel wouldn't be complete without necking a bottle of said loopy juice while dancing around in your ski boots to a covers band at the Rond Point. Yet the stereotype doesn't do full justice to the strengths of this resort.
One of the main reasons for Meribel's enduring popularity is the frenzied nightlife. In the town centre, The Pub, Scott's Bar and the Taverne are always packed, while Jack's Bar shows the football and has DJs and pool tables. While old Meribel hands still lament the loss of the old Capricorne, Le Poste de Secours now sits in the same spot and is the town's 'chic' bar. When these places close, head to either Dick's Tea Bar or the Loft down at the Chaudanne.
Now we're talking. The Rond Point is probably one of the most famous apres bars in the Alps, with live bands, dancing on tables and a brilliant atmosphere. In town, Evolution and Jack's Bar are lively and close to the base lifts.
Where to begin? Lunch at the Rond Point is a must, while Evolution does great apres snacks, fry-ups and roasts, and Pizza Express provides, as ever, some of the best pizzas in town. For local cuisine, La Kouisena, in the Chaucanne area, and Le Fromagerie, in town, are very popular. Other favourites include Le
Plantin and La Gallette, while gourmet heaven has to be Chez Kiki, in the More! area, a local institution - and that's just the eponymous chef Kiki. The beef is legendary, as is the Savoyard fondue.
