The ski resort of Livigno due to a legal technicality has a tax-free status. Situated in its own valley near the border to St Mortiz, Livigno at 1850m has some excellent snow conditions however the town is Farley spread out and the nearest life is not always that close so its vital to choose your accommodation if you don’t have a car and want to be within easy walking distance of the lifts.
Once the skiing day comes to an end there is limited activities other that the tax free shopping to take advantage of. Restaurants both on and off the piste offer great food at reasonable prices and the same can be said about the bars.
As for the slopes (110km of runs), Livigno offers great stuff for beginners and intermediates, both boarders and skiers. Apart from a few black runs and off-piste, experts will find little challenge. You can also 'ski in, ski out'. The lift system is efficient enough to negate queues, but because the slopes are separate there can be a fair amount of inconvenience. Perhaps Livigno's biggest turn-off is the transfer time - it's three to five hours from the nearest international airport. It's great for snow, beginners and cheap shopping, but it's remote and a little soulless.
During the summer months Livigno offers a great location for mounting walking and hiking.
