Les Arcs

Find Chalets Resort Guide to Les Arcs

Les Arcs offers some of the best skiing in Europe with resorts spanning over four different locations.

  • Arc 1600
  • Arc 1800
  • Arc 1950
  • Arc 2000

Les Arcs consists of several villages, all located at different levels. Starting down the mountain, the valley town of Bourg St Maurice is linked to the mountain via a quick funicular ride and also to the other towns of 1600, 1800,1950 and 2000. On either side, the villages of Vallandry and Villaroger, plus other small hamlets, make up Les Arcs. The newest resort is 1950, which architecturally appears to have been parachuted in from Whistler or another Intrawest resort. Still, each resort has its own individual feel, is well serviced and, most importantly, gives easy access to the incredible terrain on offer at Les Arcs.

Les Arcs Pro's

  • Huge area
  • Slick infrastructure.
  • Massively varied terrain.

Les Arcs Con's

  • 1950 and 2000 are somewhat isolated from front side of mountain
  • February is usually ridiculously busy.

Skiing in Les Arcs

Les Arc Ski Resort

Les Arcs is now one of the best know ski resorts in France, and the introduction of a new double car between Les and La Plange has expanded the capacity and number of ski slopes between the two areas creating one of the largest ski domains in the world. Les Arcs skiing also offers one of the most varied ski areas in the Alps with great on and off piste skiing and snowboarding.

Beginner

The consensus seems to be that 1800 offers the easiest terrain for complete beginners, and it is true that it is very easy to get to grips here thanks to the simple lift layout. Chantel 2 and Villards 25 should ease you in. Elsewhere, there are simple blues in each of the other villages to get you started. We're also big fans of the large number of mellow blues in the middle valley, especially the meandering Vallee de I'Arc, so build up to this during the week. It is a great long run.

Intermediate

In all honesty, Les Arcs is heaven for anyone with a thirst for adventure and some basic techniques under the skis. The area is enormous, well planned and slickly run so grab a map and get exploring.

Expert

You'll want to explore the varied terrain off the top of the Aiguille Rouge, which is where you'll find some of the most notable blacks and in-bounds steeps. But for top-level skiers the real draw here is the variety of terrain, as a visit to Peisey and Vallandry will attest. Here you'll find some tight, quick tree runs as well as some other long runs.

Powder

Yet again Les Arcs scores, thanks to some well-worked powder runs both in and out of bounds. Probably the easiest to access is the varied terrain

Bourg Saint Maurice links you to some of the best ski resorts in France with direct train access, Les Arc is 15km by road winding up the mountain from Bourg but can also be easily be reached by funicular throughout the day.

Les Arc 1800 is the largest of the resorts and remains the most popular with many self catered chalets, restaurants, bars and traffic free streets. The resort has been awarded highest award by the tourism board for the level of child facilities offered.

The self contained resort at 1950 has its own shops, restaurants, bars, ski school, equipment shops. It also offers a thermal spa, swimming pools and underground parking.

The lift facilities in Les Arc are some of the best in the alps, and number of runs and lifts your spoilt for choice if you’re a beginner or intermediate skier with just over 50% blue and red graded ski runs. If you’re an advanced skier then ever better as Les Arc has some great of piste skiing and hard black runs to get you excited.

Snowboarding in Les Arc

Snowboarding in Les Arc is particular good with a specialist snow park and half pipe. The resort has also introduced a bordercross park and jumps course as well as a steep and very fast down hill run, not for the faint hearted.
