Why not ski in France in the Morning, stop for lunch and ski into Switzerland for the afternoon!

You must be in Chatel, in sight of the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc, enjoy the great skiing that Chatel and the Portes du Soleil has to offer with the largest cross-border ski area in the Alps.

Skiing in Chatel

The French ski resort of Chatel is one of several ski resorts closely connected within the 650km of Portes du Soleil and has become in recent years a major tourist location with close proximity for Morzine and Les Gets ski resorts.

Note that Chatel is situated at a lower altitude than some of the major results which can result in little snow fall within the resort itself.

Chatel Ski Resort

Chatel Pro's

  • Fewer English-speaking visitors means fewer English-speaking shopkeepers, which will give you a great opportunity to practise your schoolboy/girl French!
  • Good variety of terrain.

Chatel Con's

  • The lower altitudes mean that sometimes you may have to go elsewhere for deeper snow.
  • Taxis can be hard to find after a night out.

Chatel has first class ski schools, general facilities and very enjoyable restaurants, those looking for an active and a bustling nightlife would be best to give this resort a miss.

Chatel is a little off the beaten track, which makes it an ideal ski holiday destination for families; a very traditional ski resort with a tranquil skiing environment compared to some of the much busier ski resorts in the French Alps.

Chatel has an number of good intermediate pistes and after a day or two of being on the slopes you will be wanting to take on some of the more advance slopes in the area.

Beginner

The main area, Super Chatel, is located above the village and home to the beginners'slopes.Take theTK Super Chatel, then the TK Chatel-Neuf, to find wide open, easy trails such as Bellevue and Le Lac.The green runs are generally close together and easy to find which takes the stress out of learning.

Intermediate

Chatel is perfect for people who can ski well enough to brave a blue, like the challenge of trees, and enjoy going nice and fast. Don't miss Les Combes, where you can get some serious downhill speed, and La Perdrix Blanche, a big open bowl with widely spaced trees and little powder pockets.

Expert

More advanced skiers in Chatel should head for Linga, with its steeper north-facing slopes and access to Avoriaz. Les Renards is a long black run, with some narrow chutes and smaller cliffs to drop off. There is a nice little Snowpark too if you're up for it.

Powder

There are some fantastic off-piste runs - from steep, narrow couloirs to extensive hidden powder
