Avoriaz Practicalities

Practical information and Apres Ski guide to Avoriaz

Avoriaz is famous for its bizarre architecture and town planning, first proposed by French Olympian Juan Vuarnet in the 1970s. Perched high above Morzine and built to blend in with the surrounding cliffs, most buildings are futuristic in concept, have odd, eclectic shapes and are crammed with apartments that wouldn't look out of place on TheJetsons. Avoriaz is home to an annual 'Futuristic'film festival and yet - in contrast - the town is car free, meaning horse-drawn sledges whizz everyone around. It can be reached by either road or cable car from Morzine, and everywhere has incredible access to the slopes.

Bars and clubs

Shooters, Le Tavaillon and Pub Le Choucas are all worth a punt. For big nights out, get the Prodain lift down to Morzine town.

Eating

La Falaise (T+33 (0)450-741048) is perhaps the only pizza restaurant in the world next to a 300-m cliff, hence its name. For a less edgy meal, a fondue or traditional Savoyard meal in La Reserve (T+33 (0)450-74-02-01) would suit.

Shopping

There is a supermarket island, between two pistes, in the middle of town but it's very overpriced. Morzine offers better competition but an out-of-town shop is very difficult from Avoriaz. In short, bring as many supplies as you can muster.
