Skiing in Alpe d'Huez

A vast sunny ski area suitable for all levels in spectacular settings, shame about the village.

Located in the Grandes Rousses massif, Alpe d’Huez has long been popular with the French for its breathtaking scenery, alleged 360 days of sunshine per year and huge ski terrain. ADH boasts just 50 km fewer pistes than Val d’lsere and Tignes combined, the longest piste in the Alps, excellent off-piste, one of Europe’s largest nursery areas, modern lifts and good mountain restaurants.

Unfortunately, the south facing slopes often suffer from excessive sun particularly in late season and can get very crowded.

Beginners

Gentle lower slopes make for a large network of green runs accessed by chairlifts rather than drags. Buy a dedicated beginners lift pass which accesses 11 lifts at lower cost.

Intermediate

Confident intermediates will find plenty here, practice carving on Auris and the long fare slop down to Vaujany, find your powder feet on the Dome des Petites Rousses and up stamina for the iconic Sarenne and Champagne runs. Less confident intermediates beware, some reds would be classified as blacks in other resorts.

Expert

ADH has plenty of black slopes and excellent free-riding. Warm up along the edges of Sarenne and on Dome des petits Rouses before tacking the classic routes below. These are best done with a guide and some require transport back to the resort. Extreme skiers will thrive on the Cheminess de Mascle , I’Impossible and CVol de I’Herpie couloris.
