Alagna and Riva are not only Free Ride Paradises in winter. The harsh environment, Monte Rosa and the steep cliffs that spread out onto the spacious glacial plains in an antique landscape, makes them a privileged goal for those who not only search for a touristic destination, but also mountainous country. Skiing, ski touring, ice-climbing and cross-country skiing offer enthusiasts unusual trails and well-equipped gyms.
For ski touring enthusiasts there are 4000 easy, haute routes with breathtaking panoramas that follow the Walser trails, immersed in the intact ecosystem of the Natural Park of Alto Valsesia. Thanks to their height and exposition ice falls are often in good condition in the first months of the year, creating a beautiful panorama along the Olen and Otro rivers in the vicinity of the mountain pastures.
A 10km long cross-country ski trail, complete with artificial snowfall installation, with minimum inclines, winds along the left banks of the Sesia, under the spectacular south wall of Mont Rosa, between the grassy patches of Balma and the Gabbio woodlands. For ski lovers, 180km's of ski pistes liven up the slopes of the district:123km's for intermediate skiers, 47km's for beginners and 10km's for advanced skiers and experts. 61 different trails immersed in ever changing landscapes, always in the presence of Mont Rosa, many subject to programmed snowfalls. The Alagna Ski School ensures professionalism and student competence at each level.
The possibilities for off piste skiing in the Free Ride Paradise here are endless and vastly undiscovered. With two thousand meters of vertical descent from the Passo Salati, you are clearly spoilt for choice. Steep couloirs filled with snow or open fields of untracked powder are guaranteed to fatigue even the strongest of legs. Hidden itineraries which lead you to excellent snow even days after the last big dump are waiting to fulfil a life's dream. It's all here waiting for you to discover. Fantastic routes between the old Walser hamlets and hidden in the trees of the Natural Park Alta Valsesia await you; providing fields of virgin snow instead of kilometres of slopes. Meeting point for the free riders is the Salati pass 2971, gate on the Monte Rosa, few minutes from Rifugio Guglielmina. From Salati pass, with short tours of ski mountaineering you got the aces to the best of piste area of the Monte Rosa.
The resort does only have a limited number of runs but the off piste availability more than makes up for it with open snow fields with more powder than you can wish for.
